KP area students eat fresh

SUN CHRONICLE STAFF

Wrentham and Plainville elementary schools recently served fresh and locally grown food in their cafeterias as part of a week-long statewide event.

They were among many school districts across the state celebrating Massachusetts Harvest for Students Week, during which schools highlighted the nutritional benefits of local foods on their menus and supported their local economy.

State Rep. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, and school committee members of both districts joined students for a special local foods luncheon.

Students at Delaney School in Wrentham and Wood School in Plainville were told of the importance of good nutrition, eating locally grown food and the importance of agriculture to the Massachusetts economy. The food service director for Wrentham and Plainville schools, Judy White, purchased produce from Lanni Orchards in Lunenburg. The fresh, seasonal produce included butternut squash, lemon zest broccoli and local apples.

Studies have shown that students served fresh locally grown items often eat significantly more helpings of fruits and vegetables. At least 100 public school districts, private schools, and colleges recognized the special week, and about one-quarter of the school districts in Massachusetts buy local products.
