SEEKONK - Plans for a new senior center are in the works, and they would involve a massive renovation to town hall.
Town Administrator Michael Carroll conducted a feasibility study of the project and determined a new facility for seniors would require about 6,500 square feet, which would include offices, common rooms, a kitchen and activity space. The town hall would need to be expanded by 2,500 square feet. Certain departments, such as the town clerk, would be moved to a different part of the building.
Voters rejected a tax increase to pay for a $5.1 million senior center last January.
The addition to town hall also may include meeting rooms, which would enable two town boards to meet on the same night, Carroll said.
Carroll said the goal would be to provide a low-cost addition to the building which would be kept within the debt runoff, so residents wouldn't need to pay more taxes.
Carroll did not state what the construction cost would be, noting money would have to be appropriated at the Nov. 30 town meeting to pay for an architectural design. A definite construction cost would be presented at the spring town meeting for the voters to approve.
Jan Tabor, an employee of the Human Services department, said a new senior center was badly needed, but thought 6,500 square feet was not enough space. Tabor hoped for 10,000 square feet to accommodate the baby boomers, who are going to be retiring in a few years.
"They deserve more," Tabor said of the seniors, noting that building a new center with less space "will do this town an injustice."
