FIELD HOCKEY: Wellesley too quick for D-R

WELLESLEY - When you're holding practice on the high school track surface instead of the grass field you've been playing on all season, chances are you're fighting an uphill battle.

Such was the case with the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High field hockey team Friday as the Falcons were blitzed by Wellesley in an MIAA Division 1-South first-round game, 6-0 the final.

It was the first time all season that the Falcons played on turf, and it showed as the Raiders dominated, the first half in particular where the host team raced out to a 5-0 lead. For the game, Wellesley held the edge in shots, 32-3, and penalty corners, 19-1, Leah Fessler leading the way with two goals. The Falcons got in a practice Wednesday on the high school track to get used to a quicker surface, but weren't quite prepared.

"The girls never gave up, they fought to the last second and really showed me something in the second half," said D-R coach Roberta Cordeiro, whose 12th-seeded Falcons finish at 7-2-8. "We're used to the high grass and bumpy field, and they were just too quick for us. They were just better than we were."

Despite the loss, Brittany Noons had a strong game in net as she finished with 26 saves. Fifth-seeded Wellesley improved to 16-2-1.
