VOLLEYBALL: Feehan, T-C move on

Bishop Feehan’s Morgan Lindberg had a good service game in the Shamrocks’ opening game of the MIAA Tournament.

ATTLEBORO - The Bishop Feehan High volleyball team began its quest for the MIAA Division 2-South Sectional Tournament title with a most impressive 3-0 victory over Pembroke High Friday in the opening round, turning the tables on the Titans 25-12, 25-8, 25-3.

"We're starting to pick up our aggressiveness," said Bishop Feehan coach Joe Reardon of his Shamrocks' all-court performance, especially from the service line where the team delivered 15 aces.

The No. 6 seeded Shamrocks (14-5) will now visit No. 3 seeded Fairhaven Monday for a quarterfinal round match.

Kate Hill (four kills, two blocks) and Rossi Fish (six kills, two blocks) led the Shamrock effort at the net, while defensive whiz Kayla Dion had five aces. Emily Walsh and Morgan Lindberg were also outstanding in their service games.

The Shamrocks created an 11-4 lead in the opening game as Maggie Ross had seven straight service points. Pembroke closed the gap to 14-10, but then Dion put the Shamrocks in control with seven straight service points.
In the second game, Lindberg served four points to put Bishop Feehan on top 9-3. Then four straight service points from Walsh (for a 19-6 lead) and Ross (for a 23-7) put the Shamrocks in command.

Tri-County 3,

Trinity Catholic 1

NEWTON - The Cougars were a bit sluggish getting off the bus for their MIAA Division 3-Central Tournament first rounder, but after dropping Game 1 25-15, Tri-County proceeded to reel off three straight wins to advance to Monday's quarterfinals.

Tri-County won going away, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-13.

"Took a while to get their legs, nerves and all," said Tri-County coach Howie King. "After that they played pretty well, the seniors in particular."

The Cougars were spurred on by their senior quartet of Ashley Goode, who had nine kills and 21 service points; Heather Brown, who had 10 kills; Kelsey White, who had 19 service points; and Nicole Mairle, who had 49 digs.

With the win, Tri-County, the bracket's No. 11 seed and now 10-9, advances to play third-seeded Whitinsville Christian (17-3). Trinity Catholic, the sixth seed, finishes 14-7.

Barnstable 3, Mansfield 0

BARNSTABLE - Mansfield's first MIAA Tournament appearance in six years turned out to be a short one as the Hornets were ousted by perennial powerhouse Barnstable in three games, 25-7, 25-8 and 25-10.
"We left with our chins up," said first-year coach Melissa Sursani. "I'm beyond proud of them. They really worked hard and adjusted well, they were just too strong. But we made our goal, which was to get to playoffs and this was the first time for all the girls, so they left with a good feeling."

Barnstable, the fourth seed, improves to 16-3 with the win while the Hornets, who were the 13th and final seed in the MIAA Division 1-South bracket, finishes up at 10-11 overall.
