Sestito-to-Spencer combination torches Bulldogs
FOXBORO - The Foxboro High football team makes no effort to disguise itself. A running team through and through, the Warriors live and die on the rush.
That is until Friday night at the Ahern Field, where the Warriors showed off an air attack that had been largely absent throughout the year, throwing for 155 yards in a 21-0 blanking of Hockomock League opponent Canton.
The Bulldogs keyed on the Foxboro running attack and sophomore quarterback Nick Sestito teamed with senior wide-out Ty Spencer to make the Canton defense pay, the duo hooking up four times for 87 yards and a touchdown.
"Spencer had a great game," Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli said. "And Sestito threw the ball well. We've been letting him do more now."
Not to be overshadowed, the Warrior defense definitely did its part, holding Canton to just four first downs and a measly 58 yards of total offense, helping to atone for four Warrior turnovers.
The Warrior rushing game still had success, totalling 205 yards on the game (139 by senior back Mike Delaney). On the opening drive of the game it was the Warrior ground game that did the damage, Delaney taking a pitch from the Canton 38, dropping it, but picking it up and shifting his way past the Bulldog defense and down the right sideline for the game's first score.
After Canton turned the ball over on downs Foxboro took over at its own 27, calling five straight rushing plays but struggling to get a push as the Warriors turned the ball over on downs.
From there the Foxboro passing game became the Warriors' biggest weapon. Early in the third quarter Sestito completed a third-and-10 with a 27-yard jump-ball to Spencer to the Canton eight. After the running game lost two yards on two plays, Sestito hit Spencer again in the left corner of the end zone with another jump-ball on third-and-goal.
"We know we can pass, it's just with that backfield we don't really need to," Spencer said.
The Spencer-Sestito combination was key in the Warriors final scoring drive. Early in the third quarter the duo struck twice in one drive, the second pass going for 31 yards over the middle and putting the ball at the Canton seven. From there it was two Delaney rushes, the second a dive over the pile from two yards out as Foxboro won its fourth game in a row.
The Warriors could have won by much more if not for four turnovers and 50 penalty yards, something Martinelli hopes the team can fix with big games against King Philip and Mansfield left on the schedule.
Foxboro hosts King Philip on Friday night.
