Adult district brings crowd to Wrentham
Top Headlines Almost 50 people turned out to a public hearing before the planning board Wednesday night. The zoning change is up for a vote at Monday's town meeting. The proposed bylaw designates a 15-acre industrial area east of Route 1 and adjacent to Plainville's adult entertainment zone for a similar district in Wrentham. The bylaw would allow the town more control in deciding where businesses such as adult bookstores, video stores and strip clubs could locate in town. With no restrictions, they can locate anywhere business is allowed - including downtown - board members stressed. "We tried to choose an area that was least impactful to the town," board Chairman Patrick Moore said. Several residents didn't see it that way. "It is very unlikely we will see that type of business you are afraid of coming here," planning board member and Selectman Bob Cohen told residents, noting the value of land along Route 1. Harry Forbes of Madison Street disagreed. "The location you have chosen has convenient access to (Interstate) 495," Forbes said, adding that strip clubs in Rhode Island are near highways. After an initial public hearing on the proposal last month packed with representatives of the Wrentham Sportsmen's Club, planning board members voted to remove the club's six acres from the district. Club members Wednesday again pointed to fears of increased crime and the effect on their property. "You are impacting our kids," Jim Evirs of the club said. He was accompanied by two nephews in Boy Scout uniforms who use the club land. STEPHEN PETERSON can be reached at 508-236-0377 or at speterson@thesunchronicle.com.
