ATTLEBORO - Challengers are raising and spending the most money to win a seat on the city council.
Topping the cash contest is Ward 1 candidate Joe Lazzerini, a high school senior and member of the U.S. Army Reserves, who brought in a total of $4,810 during the last two campaign finance reporting periods.
The latest reporting period ended Oct. 26.
His opponent, Cherie Felos, a law school graduate and mother of five, nearly matched him dollar for dollar and was second on the overall list, raising $4,598 in the hard-fought contest.
Meanwhile, one of two challengers for an at-large seat, Richard Conti, led all at-large candidates in raising and spending cash.
Conti was third overall in campaign contributions, coming up with $4,462.
The closest incumbent, Brian Kirby, was more than $1,000 behind, garnering $3,265 from supporters. He was followed by Kim Allard, who raised $2,640, Walter Thibodeau, who brought in $1,487, challenger Mark Cooper, who got $870, and incumbent Peter Blais, who raised $425.
In Ward 5, the only other contested council ward seat, candidates raised half as much as in the Ward 1 race.
John Davis picked up $2,620 in the September reporting period. Of that, $2,000 was his own money. Davis had not filed his October report as of early Monday afternoon.
His opponent, Duff White, picked up $2,110 in two reporting periods.
The only school board candidate to raise more than $1,000 was Brenda Furtado, and that was in the first reporting period in September. At that time, she reported campaign donations of $1,330. She had yet to file a report for October.
