Vehicle stopped on city street by witnesses, off-duty officer
ATTLEBORO - Police say an alleged drunken driver struck a row of parked cars on Elizabeth Street Monday night before being stopped by witnesses and an off-duty police officer when his damaged car got stuck on one of the parked vehicles.
Eric H. Peach, 39, of 26 East Hodges St., Norton, was ordered held in jail on $3,000 cash bail after he pleaded innocent Tuesday in Attleboro District Court.
Peach was detained at the scene by off-duty city Patrolman Gilbert Bechtel until police arrived on the scene around 10:15 p.m., police said.
Police received numerous 911 calls after Peach's Jeep struck four cars parked on Elizabeth Street before crashed into a car parked in a driveway at 40 Elizabeth St., according to police.
Assistant District Attorney Brian Zuanich said Peach attempted to back away after his wrecked vehicle became entangled with a car.
Police said Peach failed field sobriety tests and was arrested by Patrolman Keith Shepard, who was assisted by officers William Monterroso, Joseph Daday, Thomas Laporte and Detective James Cote.
Before allegedly causing the path of damage on Elizabeth Street, police allege Peach skidded while driving from Holden to North Main streets where he struck a street sign and drove over a lawn before continuing on North Main Street, police said.
Peach faces a third-offense drunken driving charge in addition to driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident after causing property damage.
He is due back in court Nov. 17.
