HAND: Leading the way on health

The U.S. Census Bureau has found that Massachusetts has the lowest rate of residents without health care in the country at 4.1 percent, while Texas has the highest at 24.1 percent.

The Third Congressional District, which includes the Attleboro area along with Worcester and Fall River, is No. 1 among congressional districts at 3.4 percent.

In Texas, the Houston area is the worst at 40 percent uninsured.

In general, Northeastern and some Midwestern states are doing well providing their residents with health care coverage while southern and western states are lagging behind.

For instance, Connecticut and Vermont have 9 percent uninsured, while Nevada has 21 percent and Mississippi is at 17.9 percent uninsured. That means members of Congress who are fighting hardest to kill health care reform come from states and districts that need it the most.

Both senators from Texas have been outspoken in their opposition to the government spreading health care to the uninsured, even though 5.7 million of their residents lack coverage.

In Alaska, former Gov. Sara Palin helped make universal health care more difficult to obtain by spreading the outrageously false rumor that reform would mean "death panels" that decide whether children with Down syndrome live or die, even though 20 percent of her neighbors go without coverage.

Both Democratic senators from Arkansas have weak knees over health care reform, despite polls showing their residents favor it and 18 percent of them lack coverage.

Alabama really only has one insurance company and 14 percent of residents have no insurance, but its politicians have shown more loyalty to the insurance lobby than the people.

The census figures also raise the question of why politicians from Massachusetts would support health care reform if so many of their constituents already have coverage.

U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester, represents the district with the highest rate of coverage, but he said coverage is only half the battle.

Another prime goal of reform is to hold down costs.

He said the cost of health care is escalating at a rate that is unsustainable. Everywhere he visits in the district, selectmen and mayors complain about large annual increases in the price of providing coverage.

Employers, families and governments cannot afford the increases, he said. And why is Massachusetts so advanced when it comes to providing coverage?

The big reason is the universal coverage law the state passed a few years ago, which parts of the federal proposal are based upon.

An Associated Press analysis also said high-income states in general tend to have high rates of coverage, and Massachusetts is a high-income state.

And what about the Third Congressional District leading the way?

McGovern said generous employers and strong unions in the district have provided for employees.

Another reason is that the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester is one of the district's largest employers.

Of course, McGovern could not help but joke that the real reason is, "They have a heck of a congressman."

Instead, you will hang your hat on a possible tax increase on deductions that most likely won't happen because the idea behind health reform is that people won't rack up $10K bills to begin with. " Oh Anna, we missed your cherubic wit! Maybe if the republix came clean as to why they oppose health care reform there could be some dialogue (and it isn't because its "socialized"). As you know, we need left wing think tanks to bat down the whacko ideas in right wing think tanks. Or maybe the left is just plain right. Calling Harvard Medical School and Dartmouth left wing or even socialist shows just how little you understand the debate.
All the way with Cato. Yeah! "

If people want to play the name-calling game, then it's fair game to say that Brookings, the Center for American Progress and everybody else cited as so-called "health care experta" are in the tank for government-run socialist healthcare. Now here is a link to an interesting liberal Democrat perspective: Robert Reich telling an audience that if politicians (Democrats) were being truthful about healthcare reform, they would admit that Democrats will kill Granny:

Instead of worrying about tax increases for health care and the associated tax credits, maybe you could focus your anger on the cartel of insurance companies that after 63 years, congress may finally brek up. But then they might have to actually compete, and yahoo's like you find that sort of thing un-american. And no, you can't touch my pony tail. "

But hey, the insurance companies need pukes like you to maintain those profit margins. And, no, it is not in the bill as you describe it, wingnut.
What a fabulous tool you are. "

Keep drinking that kool-aid, and the spoon fed pablum from liberal-left organizations such as this. " Price Waterhouse did a hatchet job for AHIP, just like they did for the tobacco lobby some years ago so take your niggling, erroneous little tax analysis and shove it, wingnut.

The Center for American Progress issued a statement today from "leading health care experts" on the "misleading AHIP report" about the Senate Finance Committee health insurance reform bill. The statement is signed by Henry J. Aaron of the Brookings Institution; David Cutler of Harvard University; Judy Feder of Georgetown University, and a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress; Elliott S. Fisher of Dartmouth Medical School; Arnold Milstein of the Institute for Health Policy Studies, University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine; Len Nichols of the New America Foundation; and Meredith Rosenthal of Harvard University.

Since you are only into the "facts" as manufactured by AHIP and Wall St (who complained to the insurance companies that they were going to make enough profit)I won't bore you with them. They are available to anyone who wants to find them. If they keep up this crap we may actually go for single payer! Won't that be cool? Aren't you excited?

Say hi to Genn Beck for me Ahole. "

The $2,500 difference at 26% tax rate = $675 tax increase on those who are sick, even if you earn less than $250K.....so much for that campaign promise, huh ? But it is a sweet gift, since the insurers claim they must raise rates by 110% because they can't make enough in penalties off of you freedom lovin' nitwits who don't get health insurance. AHIP MAKES THE CASE FOR THE PUBLIC OPTION!
Thank you, thank you very much. "

Further, where are the dems in pointing out all the wonderful new specific features of the bill, other than saying "We need Health Reform ?" (Sound of Crickets) Yep, they're all back in the district touting the efficiency and solvency of other government programs like medicare, social security, amtrak, fannie & freddie, the USPO, medicaid, etc. Keep drinking that Kool-Aid Vlad, i.e., Hand's slanted and unbalanced editorial rants. He notes that "Alabama really only has one insurance company..." doesn't give any details, and doesn't balance it with the fact that the republicans want to remedy that by allowing insurers to sell across state lines. I'll take the facts over your "truth" anyday. BTW, are you aware that the senate finance committee part of this bill to be voted on next week, has a provision to increase the deductible amount for medical expenses of itemized deductions ? Bottom line is an approx $600 tax increase for folks with major medical expenses. Oh, did I mention that this applies to folks earning under $ 250,000 a year ? Just another broken campaign promise, oh well !!!! "
