D-R wastewater system project completion near

REHOBOTH - The long-awaited and controversial wastewater system project at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School should be completed later this month, and will cost more than expected because of the rainy summer.

"We should be switching to the new system mid- to late November," Business Manager Richard Reino said.

The switchover should be without any disruptions, he added.

The school committee approved change orders that put the project approximately $28,000 over budget. The wastewater system was expected to cost approximately $950,000.

Additional funding will come from a capital improvement reserve account. Reino said the overrun was mainly from pumping water from heavy summer rains out of holes dug for the tanks.

And, removing large boulders from the site was an additional expense.

The district has applied for federal stimulus funds that are expected to reduce the overall cost of the project by about $55,000.

The final phase of the project includes finishing the parking lot across from the school's entrance and de-commissioning the existing system.
