Rocketeers fly by Canton

NORTH ATTLEBORO - No letdown here.

One week, plus a day postponement because of the rain, the North Attleboro High football team followed up last week's emotional win over Mansfield with a hard-fought 28-12 victory over Canton at Beaupre Field Sunday afternoon.

The Rocketeers rode the deep passing of quarterback Joe Kummer and the grinding runs of Brett Mastropoll to close out their Hockomock League slate at 5-3. Kummer hit on 7-of-14 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns - two to Ryan Flannery (4 receptions, 78 yards) - while Mastropoll churned out 86 yards on 15 carries.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Rocketeers (7-3 overall) broke out the big plays, Kummer hitting Flannery for a 29-yard touchdown pass, to get things going. Corey Winn converted the first of his four PAT kicks for a 7-0 North lead.

The Bulldogs (2-5 league) came right back though as Anthony LaRose scored on a short run, but the PAT kick was no good, leaving North with a one-point lead. The Rocketeers then closed out the half with another Kummer-to-Flannery scoring play, this time covering 21 yards. North carried that momentum into the third quarter, taking the second-half kickoff down the field and closing out the drive with a 14-yard run by Dylan Rayburg. After holding Canton, Kummer went deep again, this time finding Dan Johnson for a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 28-6 lead.

Canton's Anthony Byres broke off a 50-yard touchdown run in the closing moments of the third quarter, but the Rocketeer defense stuffed the two-point conversion attempt and Rayburg and Matt Sheehan had fourth-quarter interceptions to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

North had three interceptions on the day with Brady Shorey also picking off a pass.

"They play tough and physical," North coach Don Johnson said of the Bulldogs. "They're not a team you can take lightly."

The Rocketeers now have a few days to rest up and heal those late-season bumps and bruises before playing host to Attleboro at Beaupre Field for the annual Thanksgiving Day game. Kickoff is 10 a.m.
