Wide receiver Wes Welker catches a ball as he runs a drill during Wednesday’s practice. Welker didn’t play in the first Jets game.
FOXBORO - The Patriots apparently could use a good health care plan in the wake of Sunday's game in Indianapolis.
A season-high total of 19 players appeared on the first participation report of the week - some old, some new, no one borrowed and all of them black-and-blue.
Perhaps the least-injured of the lot is quarterback Tom Brady, who was in his accustomed spot of fully participating in practice due to his perpetually sore right shoulder.
Tight end Benjamin Watson (back) and cornerback Shawn Springs (knee) also practiced fully Wednesday.
Of some concern were the additions of several players to the DNP category. Defensive end Jarvis Green (knee) and running back Fred Taylor (ankle) are long-term absences, but joining them for a day off were wide receiver Sam Aiken (hip), linebacker Tully Banta-Cain (groin), linebacker Gary Guyton (illness), guard Stephen Neal (head), linebacker Rob Ninkovich (knee) and defensive end Ty Warren (ankle). Wide receiver Randy Moss also skipped practice, presumably as a veteran's day off.
In the limited participation column were linebacker Eric Alexander (groin), tight end Chris Baker (shoulder), nose tackle Ron Brace (ankle), wideout Julian Edelman (forearm), center Dan Koppen (knee), tackle Matt Light (knee) and running back Sammy Morris (knee).
At least half of the listed players should be able to play Sunday when the Patriots play host to the 4-5 New York Jets at Gillette Stadium (4:15 p.m.; Ch. 4, 12).
Holiday tree
Morris is getting closer to playing shape, but he'll have to be in good holiday spirit Friday when he and his family will join Patriot Place and Cradles to Crayons at their first annual Holiday Giving Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at Patriot Place.
According to a press release from the team, the giving tree will feature ornaments containing a special holiday request for a child in need. Visitors to Patriot Place can take an ornament and purchase the assigned gift throughout the holiday season. Gifts can be dropped off at the Patriot Place Management Office, located near the tree.
