PLAINVILLE - Firefighters say a Plainville woman's quick thinking may have saved her and her children when a blaze broke out Thursday at their Broad Street home.
A grease fire in the kitchen of 80 Broad Street was the cause of the blaze, which broke out around 5:30 p.m., Plainville Fire Chief Ted Joubert said.
Joubert said the woman, whose name was not available Thursday night, was cooking when she noticed the fire. She then called 911 and got her two children out of the house safely.
Joubert said homeowners often try to combat grease fires by throwing water on them, a tactic that actually makes the fire spread and increases the risk of injury for those in the house.
"She's responsible for this house still standing and for her children being safe," he said of the woman.
The home's kitchen was a "total loss," Joubert said, and other rooms sustained smoke and heat damage.
The woman's husband was at work when the fire broke out, Joubert said.
Plainville was assisted by North Attleboro and Wrentham fire crews.
