Feehan can't keep up with Mewis, W-H

QUINCY - It wasn't long before the best player on the field made her presence felt on Sunday evening at Veterans Memorial Field at Quincy.

Unfortunately for the Bishop Feehan Shamrocks, she was wearing a Whitman-Hanson jersey.

Just four minutes into the Division 1-South Sectional semifinal, the Falcons' Samantha Mewis elevated inside the Bishop Feehan box and headed a cross into the goal, deflating the Shamrocks as Whitman-Hanson went on to a 4-1 victory.

"She's by far the best player (we've had to go against)," Bishop Feehan coach Phil Silva said of Mewis, a member of the U17 National program.

At the four-minute mark Feehan committed a foul 40 yards from the goal, giving Whitman-Hanson a free kick from the left side of the field. Julie Monroe hit a cross with her left foot to the back post, the tall Mewis outjumping the Feehan defense and heading the ball in for a goal. The Falcons doubled their tally with 23 minutes remaining in the first half on another cross, this one from Taylor Leonard. The Feehan defense let the ball drop in the box, giving the Falcons a golden opportunity they wouldn't miss as Kelsey Murray headed the loose ball past Feehan keeper Justine Miller and into the net.

And it was just five minutes later when Whitman-Hanson scored the dagger to Feehan's hopes as Mewis took advantage of a Feehan miscue when a cross went through Miller's hands, Mewis easily poking it in as Feehan fell behind 3-0 just over halfway through the first half.

Facing elimination the Shamrocks wouldn't fold, rallying after Silva called a timeout after the third goal. With five minutes remaining in the half the Falcons tried to clear the ball, but it rolled out to Jillian Flett 35 yards away from the goal. With no hesitation Flett one-timed a shot with her right foot, blasting a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net as the Shamrocks found life going into halftime.

Feehan continued to play better as the second half began, the Shamrocks dominating possession for the first ten minutes of the second half. But Feehan couldn't find a good scoring chance with that possession.

"They played a little bit more defensively knowing that we were going to come out and attack them," Silva said.

And Whitman-Hanson made the Shamrocks pay, scoring the game's final goal with 27 minutes remaining. Marissa D'Angelo made a perfect through-pass across the ground to Leonard, who ran onto it, touching it ahead of her before sliding and placing the ball in the far right corner of the goal, past the diving reach of Melissa Ellis, who played goal in the second half for the Shamrocks.

Feehan had just five shots on net in the game while the Falcons totaled nine.

"They're a great team and they finish their opportunities," Silva said. "They probably had the ball in our box four times and they scored four goals. They didn't have a ton of chances but when they got the ball in the box they put it in."

The Shamrocks ended the year 17-2-2, second best in program history.
