Showcase event

Bishop Feehan’s Anne Galvin will be one of five Shamrock girls taking part in the annual Sun Chronicle All-Star Soccer Classic.

MANSFIELD - The annual Sun Chronicle All-Star Soccer Classic, featuring the area's best male and female high school soccer players, will be held Saturday afternoon at Mansfield High's Alumni Field.

The yearly "showcase" tournament of which dozens of collegiate coaches from throughout New England have been invited to attend will begin with the girls' all-star game at 3 p.m., to be followed at 5 p.m. by the boys' game.

Five members of the Bishop Feehan High girls' soccer team, which was once-beaten (to nationally ranked LaSalle Academy of Providence) during the regular season, are expected to participate - Elaine Martin, Jordan Logue, Annie Galvin, Siobhan Devoy and Jessica Miller.

The Shamrocks, under the direction of first-year head coach Phil Silva, won 17 matches overall this season, including a pair of one-goal decisions as the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Division 1-South Sectional Tournament, advancing to the semifinal round - and losing to eventual champion Whitman-Hanson.

Four other area girls' teams qualified for the MIAA Tournament and will have representatives in the all-star game. Tri-County High and its illustrious 100-goal striker, senior Erica Jonasson of Wrentham, participated in the Division 3-South Tournament.
Attleboro’s Jake Keefer, and his brother Justin, will both play in the all-star game.
Coach Jeff White's Dighton-Rehoboth Falcons, led by Samantha Silvia and Alyssa DaSilva, finished the season with 12 wins overall, winning a pair of one-goal matches in the Division 2-South Tournament and advancing to the quarterfinal round of play.

Foxboro, with Gianna Roma, Carley Martyniak, Rachel Jamieson and Kristen Hoffman on the pitch, won 10 matches overall and qualified for the Division 2-South Tournament as well, while Todd Kefor's Norton High Lancers tied (seven) more matches than it won (six) during the regular season, but then went on to win a pair of rounds in the Division 2-South Tournament as well, advancing to the quarterfinals.

The MIAA Division 1-South Sectional Tournament semifinalist King Philip High Warriors - powered by Hockomock League MVP Matt Heagney, Dighton-Rehoboth High, powered by all-time leading single season goal scorer Keith Rose and Attleboro High, powered by the Keefer brothers - Jake and Justin - the top two vote-getters in the Old Colony League and both named to the Eastern Mass. and Mass. State Coaches all-star teams, will have players on the field for the boys' game.

This season, seven area high schools advanced to postseason play. Coach Kip Lewis' KP Warriors won 10 regular season matches, took a No. 7 seed for the Division 1-South Tournament, and then won three rounds to advance to the semifinals, losing an epic double overtime thriller to Catholic Memorial.

Peter Pereira, the Attleboro High boys' coach who serves as the Sun Chronicle Classic coordinator of events, had his Bombardiers produce a 10-4-4 regular season record and win a round in the Division 1-South Tournament. North Attleboro and Dighton-Rehoboth also advanced to the Division 1-South tourney field as the Nos. 20 and 21 seeds.

The Bishop Feehan Shamrocks, with Anthony Cichetti and Devin Devoy on the attack, won nine matches and the EAC title, while the Norton High Lancers, with a sophomore rookie in net - Ben Donovan - won nine matches and also participated in the Division 2-South Tournament. The ever-dangerous striker Aris Santiago guided Seekonk High to 11 regular season wins and a spot in the Division 3-South playoffs.
