NORTH ATTLEBORO - North Attleboro Electric customers will be getting a small break on their electric bills, beginning next month.

Electric commissioners voted on Wednesday to reduce the department's Purchased Power Adjustment charge, which is used to offset the cost of fuel used to generate and deliver electricity.

The charge, which is 2.5 cents per kilowatt hour has been reduced to 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour, due to declining fuel costs.

For the average customer who uses 500 kilowatt hours of electricity each month, their monthly bill will drop from $70.04 to $68.45, a 2.27 percent reduction. Customers will begin seeing the reduced rate in the November billing.

"The Board's action in again reducing the Purchased Power Adjustment, is another illustration of the board and North Attleboro Electric Department working to be responsive to the needs of our customers," said Charles Mottinger, chairman of the electric commission. "After a prudent review and evaluation, we are pleased to be able to again reduce the rates of our customers; even though the department must confront the challenges of volatile energy prices and a changing legal and regulatory environment." Mottinger said since there is no assurance that the volatility in energy costs will end soon, North Attleboro Electric will continue to monitor events and the energy market and make adjustments as needed.

The Purchased Power Adjustment has been part of the electric department's rates since January, 2006. This is the fourth time the electric commission has dropped the Purchased Power Adjustment since October, 2008.
