BOYS SOCCER: Underdog role suits KP fine

EASTHAM - The King Philip Regional High boys' soccer team relishes the challenge of being contested for loose balls, playing on the road, even, having the officials look upon the Warriors with ill-favor.
For the second time in three days, the Warriors went into extra time to stay alive in the MIAA Division 1-South Sectionals - and won.
Junior central defender Matt Keys raced toward the net, uplifted his 6-foot-4 frame and headed in a long free kick from the right flank taken from 40 yards out by senior midfielder Matt Heagney to produce the match-winning goal with two minutes left in the second "sudden victory" overtime period Monday, providing the Warriors their margin in a 2-1 decision over Nauset.
"They're a quality team and it's a tough place to play," surmised KP coach Kip Lewis, whose Warriors, the No. 11 seed, head into Wednesday's Elite Eight round of play, a quarterfinal round match with a 12-5-3 slate - at Oliver Ames (a 2-1 winner over Bridgewater-Raynham), at 5 p.m. at Muscato Stadium.
Senior midfielder Chris Uvanovic put KP into the lead in the 49th minute, scoring on a partial breakaway, turning around a pair of Nauset defenders. Mike Perry set the scoring sequence in motion for KP, by winning a 50-50 ball just inside the midfield stripe with a clever tackle.
Nauset, however, tied the match in the 73rd minute off of a free kick - with two balls on the field. The not-in-use ball sailed in front of KP goalie Tyler Marra. When the Warrior netminder's eyes gazed at the first sphere coming his way, which he tough was the "live" ball, Nauset sent the second ball his way and into the net.
Lewis protested the call with match officials, seeking a re-start, but was denied.
Keys moved to the forefront on the restart kick by Heagney and produced his third match-winning goal of the season.
The Warriors and Marra escaped danger twice, Nauset hitting the crossbar on a first half drive and off of a header in the second half. "Marra saved three goals for us and Austin Brais, at outside right back, was a force in creating an attack for us on the right side," added Lewis.
The Warriors might have had the better run of play, but Nauset might have had the better scoring chances. KP plays a physical match and Nauset was awarded countless restarts. "We felt like we dominated and we didn't earn a lot inside their 20," added Lewis.
