VOLLEYBALL: Shamrocks move on

FAIRHAVEN - Tournament-tested already with five grueling non-league losses against some of the best teams in the state, a trip to South Coast Conference foe Fairhaven wasn't exactly a piece of cake for the Bishop Feehan High girls' volleyball team, but the Shamrocks were more than ready and prevailed in four games Monday night.

Feehan, the MIAA Division 2-South's sixth seed, won the first game 25-14, lost Game 2 25-23 then pulled out the win with 26-24 and 25-19 decisions.

"After we beat them the first game we told the girls it wasn't going to be that easy, and hats off to Fairhaven because they're a young team but they were a very good team," said Feehan coach Joe Reardon, whose Shamrocks (15-5) now earn a trip to play Hockomock League foe Oliver Ames (No. 2 seed, 18-3) on Thursday night.

"As for us it was a real team effort," said Reardon. "I think our senior leadership and the fact that the girls have played in a few tournament games factored in. Plus we played some of the best competition in the state during the season. We had tough serving and great passing and four kids with at least seven kills."

Lexi Sells and Rossi Fish both had seven kills apiece while Kate Hill led the way with 10 kills, an ace and two blocks. Morgan Lindberg had a huge game with eight kills, 14 digs and an ace. Kristina O'Keefe had a big night at the net with three blocks and two kills. Defensively, Kayla Dion (16 digs, four aces) and Emily Walsh (12 digs, three aces) both played well, while Liz Gingras had 15 assists. Fairhaven, the No. 3 seed, checks out at 15-4.

Whitinsville 3, Tri-County 0

NORTHBRIDGE - A solid season by any measure, things came to an end for the Cougars as they dropped the MIAA Division 3-Central Sectional quarterfinal match by scores of 25-22, 25-9 and 25-9.

Tri-County's last lead of the night came at 16-15 in Game 1 but it was all Crusaders after that.

"They just got on a roll, started hitting everything. They were bigger, taller and by far the best team we played all year," said T-C coach Howard King.

Seniors Ashley Goode (seven kills) and Kelsey White (10 service points) both played well, as did Lacey DeRose, who had 26 digs.

Whitinsville Christian, the tourney's No. 3 seed, improves to 18-3.
