State police say city man was racing
ATTLEBORO - Two drivers face racing charges in an early-morning double rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Attleboro this weekend that injured three people and seriously injured a fourth.
State police will charge Adam Demers, 23, of Attleboro and Vannareth Sin, 24, of Lowell with racing, speeding, reckless operation and failure to stay within marked lanes in the Saturday morning crash, said Sgt. Matthew Murray, state police spokesman.
Meanwhile, Matthew Copeland, 24, of Tiverton, R.I., was listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence on Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Copeland and Zachary Jacob, 19, of Attleboro were passengers in a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta driven by Demers in the crash, which happened shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday.
State police say Demers and Sin, driving a 2002 BMW, were heading south in adjacent lanes on I-95 when they collided, careening into the woods on the right side of the highway between Newport Avenue and Route 1.
Demers was thrown from his car, according to emergency personnel at the scene.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extricate one of Demers' passengers from the Volkswagen, which was surrounded by trees.
Demers, Sin and Jacob were treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital on Saturday night.
Firefighters were at the scene for about three hours. State police closed two travel lanes for some time during the investigation.
The accident remains under investigation by the state police, led by Trooper Jason Morse of the Foxboro barracks.
