A better Seekonk? Officials list ideas

SEEKONK - The heads of several town departments met with selectmen last week to outline goals and objectives.

Town Clerk Jan Parker wants to increase voter turnout at town meetings and elections. One way to boost attendance would be to post signs at schools notifying the public of town meetings, Parker said. She also hopes to increase the number of passports issued and to do driver license renewals, which would generate revenue for the town.

Public Works Director Robert Lamoreaux would like to provide more oversight of subdivisions under construction to ensure quality. Lamoreaux also called for improved road maintenance and infrastructure development to provide for safe roads, a stormwater management plan to improve water quality, as well as training for DPW workers, improvement of roadside cleaning programs and the improvement of public relations with department heads.

The youth and recreation commission would like to be referred to as the parks and recreation commission. The board's plans include establishing an ice rink behind Hurley Middle School, establishing youth summer activities at Aitken and Martin schools and the addition of a seasonal field maintenance staff as part of the Seekonk summer job program. Other goals include a survey to help establish recreational needs of the town and a "wall of recognition" for those who have made outstanding contributions to the town.

Selectmen also heard from representatives of the conservation commission, the board of assessors, the finance department and the public library.
