GOBIS: Collins running well in college

After a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional qualifying meet, Mansfield High product Ryan Collins, the superb sophomore cross country runner at the University of Virginia, finished 41st at the NCAA National Championship Meet in Terre Haute, Indiana. Collins was the Cavaliers' top finisher at 30:22.

- Keith Rose, the senior striker and goal-scoring marvel for the Dighton-Rehoboth High boys' soccer team, scored the lone goal for the South team in a 1-0 victory over the North Friday in Quincy at the Eastern Mass. Coaches Association All-Star Game.

- Junior defender and captain Michaela Ross of Mansfield (two goals, two assists) and freshman midfielder Chelsey Ballard of Mansfield (three goals, three assists) of the Wheelock College field hockey team (7-10) were named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference team, while Attleboro's Carly Barone, a freshman for unbeaten NECC champion (8-0, 13-8 overall) Becker was an honorable mention selection, starting all 21 matches, having two goals and one assist.

- The Attleboro High junior varsity football team finished the season unbeaten (9-0-1) with a 30-0 victory over North Attleboro. The offensive line - Dylan Vaillancourt, Ray Russas, Dalton Mowry, Nick Blanchette, Chad Vignoni and Zach Morrison - created ample running room for backs Money Singh, Joey Grenon, Sean Coughlin and Matt Borgellas and protection for QB Evan Toomey.

- The Mansfield High junior varsity football team finished the season with a 10-0-1 record after defeating Foxboro (9-2) 28-13. The understudy Hornets outscored their opponents 391 (35.5 per game) to 75 (6.8 per game). The Hornets were led by sophomore QB George Busharis and sophomore running backs Mike Farrell, Greg Donahue and Blayne Taylor. On defense linebackers Bob Brunelle, Ted Ferreira, Joe Oram, Abe Soares and John Caughey were omnipresent.
- The unbeaten (10-0) North Attleboro High freshman football team, coached by Jason Feid, won a rollicking 30-26 victory over Attleboro. A TD pass from Ryan Perron to Alex Jette with 17 seconds left finished off a 50-yard drive after the Bombardiers took an intentional safety to, hopefully, preserve a 26-22 lead after intercepting a Rocketeer pass with two minutes to go. North held a 22-6 lead at the half, due in part to RB-LB Dwayne Hunter and guard-defensive end Harrison Carmichael.

- North Attleboro's Emily Counoyer, the senior center for the unbeaten (4-0) PC women's hoop team, scored a career-high 25 points with a team-best nine rebounds in a 23-point win over Quinnipiac this week.

- North Attleboro High soccer star Connor Grealish was the lucky winner of the $2,900 "50-50" jackpot at the Red Rocketeer-Attleboro High Thanksgiving Day football game.

- Mansfield High defender James Doherty was named to the New England Revolution's under-18 "developmental" team, while Bishop Feehan High sophomore striker Devin Devoy and Attleboro High freshman midfielder Dominik Machado were selected to the under-16 team.

- Former Bishop Feehan High soccer standout Charlie Romero of Norton, a junior forward was named to the first All-NESCAC Team and was a 2009 All-Academic selection, in addition, the junior forward helped guide his Williams College men's soccer team (16-2-3) to the NCAA Division III Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, Dec. 4-5. The Ephs beat York College (PA.) and Newport University (VA.) both in double overtime shootouts to advance out of the East Regionals, both matches ending at 1-1. Romero was the Ephs' leading scorer with 12 goals and six assists.

- "For a first-year varsity player, he came in and did the job," said Norton High boys' soccer coach Eric Greene of sophomore goalkeeper Ben Donovan, who posted an 0.73 goals against mark with six shutouts.

- Former Bishop Feehan High swimmer Chris Payson of North Attleboro will be taking over the North Attleboro High boys' and girls' winter swimming program.

- The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team (10-7 last year under former Mt. Holyoke coach Kellie Young) has landed King Philip High Warrior Hillary Bushway as one of the Cardinals' incoming recruits for 2010.

- "She was very much a weapon for us," said North Attleboro High girls' soccer coach Geoff Burgess of senior sweeper Jill Haney, who took all the Rocketeer free kicks and corner kicks, totaling eight assists on the season.

- At the NCAA Division III Championship Cross Country Meet, Johnson and Wales University's Alexandra Wessman, a senior from King Philip High, was the Wildcats' top finisher, in the 102nd spot at 24:51, while Dighton-Rehoboth High grad Amanda Charbonneau, a junior, was 197th.
- Former North Attleboro High Red Rocketeer Glen Jusczyk, representing the Redline BMX bike company, competed in his ninth Ironman competition, in Panama City, Fla., last weekend, having his best finish ever - 15 hours, seven minutes ...

- Former Dighton-Rehoboth High Falcon Rachel Elman was an All-Little East Conference tennis selection at No. 2 doubles, having an 11-2 record for Bridgewater State. At singles, Elman posted a 7-7 mark, the Bears reaching the LEC championship match.

- Former Foxboro High Warrior soccer booter Pat Corliss, now at the University of Maine-Machias, was named to the All-Sunrise Conference team as a defender.

- Former Dighton-Rehoboth High goal-scoring soccer whiz Tiffany Pacheco received honorable mention acclaim to the University Athletic Association's all-star women's team, a junior forward at Brandeis (10-6-5), being the Judges' No. 2 scorer with nine goals and six assists.

- Attleboro's Sheila McKenna and her High Fives women's senior hoop team went 3-0 in the recent Rock the Ages Basketball Tournament in Winchester, defeating Virginia in double overtime, the Connecticut Sirens and the Mass. Miracles.
