Wondering about Pats, traffic light

Oh woe is me! Oh woe is me, the best the Patriots can do this year is 13-3. Yes, that opinion came over the phone to me from cousin Chuck down in Hollywood, Fla.

Yes, even he is slowly becoming a "doubting Thomas" after his football god, Bill Belichick, seemed to have lost his senses and opted to go for a first down from his own 28-yard line on fourth and two.

We all know what evolved after that decision.

I think Bill misses Josh McDaniels, now coaching in Denver.

Going on to the roadways of our city, what's going on with the traffic light heading west on Route 123 at West Street and Newport Avenue? We get green for about six seconds, then red again. I figure if X amount of traffic heads east, then the same or more is heading west later on.

Why can't the light be adjusted so that the timing is more equal? Holiday shopping is miserable enough as it is.

You need three hands to drive, eat and smoke

I hear tell that officials are going to crack down and issue citations for rolling through stop signs. The law states a vehicle must come to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection.

Me, myself and I are tired of getting the middle finger from these folks who are multi-tasking while operating a vehicle. I get cut off as I approach an intersection where I have the right of way. Vehicles turn without use of directionals, swaying over the center travel lines, etc.

I can say there are a lot more people operating a motor vehicle while dialing, or texting on a cell phone. One day at a red light, I saw an operator smoking and talking on the cell phone and every now and again taking a sip of hot coffee.

When I took my operator's license testing, I was taught to keep my hands on the steering wheel at 11 and 2. I was always taught that I am responsible for controlling my vehicle at all times.

I believe there is a law about impeded operation. I also believe that there is a law which states something like operating to endanger where the public safety might be endangered.

I do not know if citations are being issued for these violations or not. I would gather that a clampdown on these violations would bring in a lot of revenue and also perhaps save lives in due time. However, no matter how much revenue is going into funds, there has to be responsible control over the funding so it will keep checks and balances intact. There has to be a stop to money being spent to purchase new items when old items are still in good shape. How high can the deficit get before we run out of oxygen and collapse?

The system has to be corrected before things start falling like dominos.

Once the first domino falls, all the other dominos will fall. It will take a long time to get the dominos to stand up again in their proper place. The first of these dominos is rocking.

Get at root cause of fiscal meltdown

I guess we are going to get that footbridge at the stadium after all. Where are our state reps on this topic?

I guess they are not running for re-election.

Aren't they supposed to represent the taxpayers? They are doing a lousy job.

I guess Mr. Kraft got what he wanted anyway.

What about all the funding for those agencies that help people in need? They could use that money for help. Mr. Kraft can now send more money overseas for buildings with his name on them.

Fix Attleboro's Slater Street before tackling North Main

I noticed that money has been designated to fix North Main Street from Holman to Holden. I drive that road a lot and I guess at some point it needs to be resurfaced, but it doesn't have any potholes etc.

The road that I would like to see fixed is the stretch of Slater Street between Wilmarth and the Attleboro/Norton line. There are almost continuous potholes on one side of the street and this causes drivers to drive in the middle of the road to avoid them.

Since this road has lots of curves and spots where you can't see the cars coming in the opposite direction until the last minute, this is a real safety hazard. Also, when it rains , the water forms lakes that you must drive your car through.

With winter coming, can you do something to fix this road before we do North Main Street?

Biggest US problem? Just follow the money

After watching this past week's news, I have a better understanding of why lowering taxes is important.

The insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, banks, credit card companies and other businesses want you to pay lower taxes.

They want your money.

Credit card interest is as high as 30 percent.

Bank fees, store prices, health and home insurance payments keep going up. Prices for home fuel and gasoline keep changing. Capitalists want you to spend all your money and borrow to gouge you some more.

The infrastructure is collapsing. Government revenue is down.

Deficit spending is necessary to support two useless wars. Bail-out money for industries. With not enough revenue coming into the Treasury, the deficit and national debt keeps increasing.

What I saw and heard on TV was that shortly we must deal with the national debt or the value of a dollar could collapse.

Congress has let us down by not putting regulations on businesses that are gouging all of us.

The people seem to be ignorant of what is going on.

They will not call on their congressmen to take the necessary steps to correct our financial shortfall. Our ship of state is sinking. Who will bail it out? We must help. It is all about money.

" budist...how many permanent jobs are created with this move. What types, and why wouldn't they have a job without a footbridge.
The only thing you're right about is that I miscalculated. Then again the scenario was 100 jobs...an extremely generous number, but $90k/job is also insanely generous.
Again, please identify what jobs are being created, that would not be possible without the footbridge built with borrowed foreign money? "

" Sullivan Stadium??? step into the 21st century for a moment, the state owns the footbridge people will be put to work building it, the development that will happen after that will also create jobs. 9 million is a drop in the bucket after the money spent on bailing out the Frikken banks and the Cash for Clunkers program to bail out the Auto industry your children's children will be paying for that screw up. Don't forget who's controlling the stimulus funds.....The State we will never see it so may as well put it to good use and create jobs!!! "

" Stimulus funds were said to create jobs. How many jobs have been, or will be created with the $9M? That’s 2x what Sullivan Stadium costs; and this is just a foot bridge!
Give the money, which we may take in in tax revenue in '2999 back.
If there's a need, let private concerns pay for it.
Met-life, Sprint, Nike, or Coors could pay for this in the amount any of them spend in advertising at the stadium in a single season. Their pay back would be ad space on the bridge.
Set the free market free, and stop interfering! "

As you may have guessed, I'm in the industry and sometimes what appears to be a gratuitous potshot can get under one's skin. I agree with you wholeheartedly that $20k won't cover much in the event of a serious accident, however there's no shortage of people who purchase those low limits (even wealthy people & homeowners who should know better). Thanks for the clarification. "

Having said that, should zoning allow for parking across major highways if there is land available adjacent to a facility?

Seems like Kraft is crafty. Dumb like a fox? "

" Mr. Kenyon: I'm not sure what point you are attempting to make. I can tell you that congress has no constitutional authority over private concerns.
Instead of following the money, perhaps we should follow the White House visitors list. In the top tier, beside a global union leader, we have reps from AARP, Pharmasutical Co, and BCBS.
We are in big trouble, due to the feds printing of money. What until this is undated! http://www.chartingstocks.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/money-supply.gif "

curmudgeon wrote on Nov 29, 2009 9:12 AM:

" The Kraft project, is not his, it is Commonwealth of Mass DOT project to improve the safety of crossing Route 1. Every seems to forget that unlike most NFL cities his stadium was built with private funds, not city, state or a quasi-public authority borrowing.

When he builds his office park it will be built with private monies. The pedestrian overpass is there to allow traffic along Route 1 to be able to travel at a higher flow rate as it will not have to stop travel to allow for excessive foot traffic across the four plus lanes of highway.

That money can not be used to restore social services, that is not an allowed use of those funds.

Am I happy with hard cuts in social services no, but to restore those cuts or to stop the bleeding requires spending adjustments at the state level. i.e. reduction in hack positions and compensation.

Foxboro still can't understand why the 0.075% meals tax tastes so bad to you, just with those high roller restaurants at his place, you have orchard of low hanging fruit to grab for your town. "

rick wrote on Nov 29, 2009 8:52 AM:

" By the way gimmesum, MA is hardly the only state that mandates insurance and believe it or not it actually helps keep the rate down because we have the lowest uninsured rate in the country (who do you think pays for the accidents the uninsured drivers get into?) Re a $50k deductible - considering the state only requires that you carry $20k worth of insurance, that would be rather silly. You say the companies that are here are "probably" here because we mandate insurance? in the few states that don't mandate it there are plenty of companies competing so that kinda kills that argument. You're just looking for something to whine about without really looking at the facts. "

rick wrote on Nov 29, 2009 8:48 AM:

" Gimmesum, why don't you compare what we pay to other states, you're the one making claims, or do you just like to complain without any basis in fact? The last study that I'm aware of was done based on 2004 MA auto rates. At the time, MA was #4 in the country however the MA state rate had gone down about 25% and with the advent of managed competition another 7.5% (statewide average). When comparing MA Auto rates, you have to compare MA to other states with similar characteristics - traffic density, road construction and above all - snow. It's pointless to compare us to states that don't have our traffic density or weather problems. When you compare us using those criteria, MA has never been the highest. I suppose, however, it is easier to just complain about things without any basis in fact. "

" Maybe you're right, Rick. But compare what we pay to other states.

The insurance companies that come here are probably here because we mandate insurance. We mandate insurance and then mandate certain standards of coverage. For those of us who have to shop for insurance, there really is not much choice or competition. Maybe I am wrong.

But for the sake of argument, can I find a policy acceptable to the state that allows for a $50,000 deductable? If so, how much? Maybe jofabian can answer that. "
