Nostalgia shop to open at former Claire's; sandwich place to become bank
ATTLEBORO - A city man hopes to help revive downtown's lively past with stuff from the past.

Gary Juaire, an Attleboro native, aims to open a memorabilia store in the former Claire's Casual clothing shop on South Main Street. The shop, to be known as "Blast from the Past," is scheduled to open Tuesday.

Juaire said the store will feature a "unique mix of nostalgically themed merchandise."

"Blast from the Past presents a virtual who's who of pop culture's biggest stars," he said in a news release. "The iconic images of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles and many others will adorn the shelves."

T-shirts, posters, metal signs, comic books, toys and games are some of the other products that will be available.
Juaire said he owns a similar store in Falmouth with his brother and sister-in-law.

Success of his new store at 8 South Main St. will help downtown succeed, he said.

"Blast from the Past represents more than a theme for the store," he said. "It signifies my wish to to see a resurgence of the lively shopping mecca that was once downtown Attleboro."

Meanwhile, on Pleasant Street, a vacant sandwich shop is to become a bank.

The site of the former D'Angelo restaurant will become a branch of Rockland Trust, according to permits filed in the building inspection office.

The 2,917-square-foot structure at 490 Pleasant St. will be gutted and transformed for the banking business in the coming months.

Rockland intends to spend about $650,000 on the renovations, according to the plans it filed.

It's the second empty building on Pleasant scheduled for a new business in recent months.

The former Tarbox auto dealership is to become an auto repair shop and convenience store.

" It's amazing that people would judge a business before ever even stepping one foot inside. I've been to the Falmouth Blast From The Past and thought it was a fun place to shop. It is not a "head" shop full of metal shirts. It has a great assortment of nostalgic items. I saw entire families on vacation finding things to buy. My friend went there often to get Wizard of Oz items for his girlfriend. The store may not be for everyone, but it sure is a heck of a lot better than an empty store front. "

" Park St. Pizza is a very nice place to get pizza, wings or a sandwich. Its a great addition to the downtown area. I'd even go so far as saying its the best pizza in the city. "

" Is nostalgic the place that sells bongs? "

" Anyone know how well that new pizza restaurant is doing? You know, the one that received the development(tax) money. Park St. pizza. "

" steves-I agree with you there. Nostalgic has been around for a long time and is barely holding their own. SMall businesses are getting put to rest far too often. Good luck to the new storeowners and any future ones. I would love too see Attleboro rock n roll like North Attleboro! "

" I stopped into this shop yesterday morning after breakfast at Morins. I liked it quite a bit. The owner was friendly and optimistic.
Rather than writing moronic comments, why not try to support some of these business. I'm sure the owners would like your input so that they can build the kind of business people want.
The downtown floundered because people stopped buying there. "

" Is this a joke? Well if there is one city where a dumb store selling metal tshirts will flourish it's attleboro. This city is stuck in the 80's. "

" What about the poor guy who already has a similar shop, that's been struggling for the past few years ?
This will put 2 stores competing for a limited customer base.
New businesses at the expense of old ones is this the master plan? "

" Best of luck! I hope this works. In time maybe antiques will be added to the store. Great possibilities! Don'tlisten to these Debbie Downers. At least your willing to give it a try. "

" Yes. A store where I can buy "The Partridge Family" board game will certainly turn downtown Attleboro into a shopping mecca. "

" I love where the downtown revitalization is heading. Banks and obscure novelty shops that will be gone within a year. "

" Great to see the former D'Angelos sub shop becoming a brance of the Rockland Trust. Wouldn't it have been nice if the article mentioned the "Old" branch of the Rockland Trust downtown. Is that one staying open or simply moving into the sandwich shop? "
