Group seeking tax hike to replace Freeman-Centennial offers tour
NORFOLK - A final tour of Freeman-Centennial School is scheduled for Tuesday before residents head to the polls Dec. 8 to vote on a Proposition 2 1/2 tax increase to fund a new $37 million school.

ACT NOW (Advocacy and Communication Toward Norfolk's Opportunity Window) is offering the tour starting at 7:30 p.m.

The tour will provide residents with an opportunity to hear about and view the building concerns that led to the proposed building project, organizers say. The tour will begin at the school's main entrance, Door 10.

Residents at the Nov. 10 special town meeting voted overwhelmingly to ask voters at the Dec. 8 special election to support a Proposition 2 1/2 override to pay for the new school.

The tax impact, per $100,000 assessed valuation, would be an average of $94 a year, for about 20 years of a bond. The school building to replace the outdated and cramped Freeman-Centennial School is estimated to cost $36.9 million, with the state picking up $17.3 million or 46 percent of the tab. The town would have to fund the remaining $19.6 million. Repairs and renovations that would be needed over the next several years would nearly equal the that town share, proponents said.

More information about the proposed school building project or ACT NOW can be found on the ACT NOW Web site http://sites.google.com/site/actnoworg or by contacting Linda Melanson at 508-541-1460.
