PC rains threes on Vermont

PROVIDENCE - When the Friars let it fly and the ball swishes through the net, they can be a dangerous opponent for Big East Conference foes this season.

Providence College hit on 15 three-point field goals, six different Friars hitting at least one trifecta in a 106-64 clobbering of Vermont at The Dunk Tuesday.

"We're getting better chemistry," said Friar freshman guard Duke Mondy. "We push each other every day in practice, so in a game like this, we're running the break and looking for each other."

And how!

The Friars had 21 assists on their 37 field goals, while their pressure defense resulted in 19 Catamount turnovers which translated into 33 PC points. All told, 11 players got into the scoring act for the Friars (4-1), who never trailed, owned a 30-point (56-26) lead at intermission and an 84-43 advantage at the 10-minute mark of the second half.

"Twenty one assists, that's a lot of players contributing," said Friar coach Keno Davis - PC being led in the scoring act by Marshon Brooks' 24 points (on 8-for-10 shooting) and 20 points from Jamine "Greedy" Peterson.

Moreover, Vermont's two-time America East Conference Player of the Year, Marqus Blakely, produced a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, along with five assists and five steals. But the rest of the Catamounts went a combined 13-for-45 from the floor.

"If we make a mistake (defensively), let's make it an aggressive mistake," said Davis of the Friar defense. "Let's try to play hard and not foul. Vermont (with a six-point victory at Rutgers last week) is a talented team that wanted to play in the half-court.

"We had to force the tempo. Our full-court press is something that we've been working on and our half-court defense has gotten a lot better."

The Friars hit nine three-pointers in the first half, with six players hitting at least one. In the foul-marred (20) first 20 minutes of play, PC had 17 points off Vermont turnovers too.

Junior college transfer Kyle Wright added 13 points and six rebounds for PC coming off the bench, while Sharaud Curry (five assists) and Brian McKenzie each had nine points and three rebounds - the Friars having a 52-32 superiority off the glass. Another rookie, guard Vincent Council had seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Vermont (2-2), playing the fourth of 10 straight road games to begin the season, hung around with PC for the first 10 minutes. Brooks, Mondy and McKenzie each hit a three-pointer in a 20-4 surge over a four-minute span which gave the Friars a 33-15 advantage. Then over the final five minutes, the Friars outscored the Catamounts 18-4 with Council, Brooks and Mondy hitting three-pointers.

"If we shoot well every game, we'll win a lot of them," said Davis.
