Senate OKs health care measure, reaching milestone

Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois talks to reporters about health care reform outside the West Wing of the White House in Washington.
WASHINGTON — The Senate has passed President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul in a climactic Christmas Eve vote, extending medical insurance to 30 million Americans. The bill requires nearly all Americans to buy insurance and forbids insurance companies from denying coverage based on patients' pre-existing conditions.
The 60-39 vote on a cold morning capped months of arduous negotiations and 24 days of floor debate. It followed a succession of failures by past Congresses to get to this point. Vice President Joe Biden presided as 58 Democrats and two independents voted "yes." Republicans unanimously voted "no."
The Senate's bill must still be merged with legislation passed by the House before Obama could sign a final bill in the new year.
There are significant differences between the two measures but Democrats say they've come too far now to fail. Both bills would extend health insurance to more than 30 million more Americans.
Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, who made health reform his life's work, watched the vote from the gallery.
"This morning isn't the end of the process, it's merely the beginning. We'll continue to build on this success to improve our health system even more," Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said before the vote. "But that process cannot begin unless we start today ... There may not be a next time."
The House passed its own measure in November. The White House and Congress have now come further toward the goal of a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's health care system than any of their predecessors.

Vladsback - Ken has health insurance.
Get it right - still cannot answer a simple question. What does this bill do for you?
For all those who are in favor of this bill. I suggest you go see the Wizard for a brain. Since no seems to know what is in the Senate bill for sure and now both the House version and Senate versions must be combined. so one knows what the final bill is going to be. Thus you must need a brain to be in favor of something that does not exist in its current form.
For me, I know from both bills that there are too many things I don't like. So I have clue!
Lastly our congressman are so lame, that if they held out maybe they could have gotten us some money! Oh we did get a little payment for the Senatorial appointment. More about this later.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! "

Also, what they don't mention is where are we going to get doctors who care for 30 million people? "

If he does I will be able to say the same thing Rep. Joe Wilson from S.C. said about your president, YOU LIE!
Time will tell! It's time, OBAMA, You Lie! "

Why take control of 17% of the economy? Why not just list the causes, and do some real trouble shooting, with results that don't violate the Constitution? "

When I recently spoke to my cardiologist, his comment to me was that if this government take over of health care passes, he will leave the practice of medicine. I'm sure he will not be alone. So all you people out there who voted Democrat in the last election, you will soon find out how much you, your family, and all Americans will suffer as a result of that poor decision. So the next time you are very sick, try calling Senator Kerry for help with your chest pains, as the local cardiologist may no longer be there. "

As someone that is self-employed and paying over $1500 a month for health insurance, I want to see some change, but more free healthcare is something I can not afford. When this state passed its healthcare bill we were told our rates would go down, mine have risen from $987 a month to over $1500. Now they want to tax me on my plan that is over $8500 a year and considered a premium plan. I think I want to give up my citizenship and become illegal alien so I can get free healthcare. "

1. It will negaitively impact those citizens who currently have healthcare and who earned thier healthcare as part of retirement.
2. It will result in higher costs ( passed on through taxes to companies) in the healthcare plans that current workers get as a benefit from thier employers.
3. The bill contains too many special deals and costs that amount to nothing more than bribes to get Senator votes.
4. It will result in cuts in Medicare ( Advantage program)and services to senior citizens. Ultimatly limitting service more on the bases of cost than clinical outcome/health.
5. The Congressional Budget Office yesterday indicated that this bill would likely add to the deficit. The numbers that were initially provided were rigged. "
