HOCKEY: Shamrocks grab Braga Cup
Thursday, January 14, 2010 1:48 AM EST
TAUNTON - For the first time in its six-year existence, the Bishop Feehan hockey team is in possession of the Reid Braga Cup.
Named for the former Feehan coach that attended Coyle-Cassidy, the cup goes to the winner of the Shamrocks' game against Coyle every year. And, with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night, Feehan took home the trophy outright for the first time.
The Shamrocks got on the board first when Xavier Gemba slammed home a pass from Tim Dunn at 5:30 of the first period. But Coyle tied it up just one minute later, and the score stayed deadlocked until one minute into the third.
On the powerplay Chris Collins dumped the puck behind the Coyle net, Matt Blackman sending a pass across the front that Dunn banged in for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Coyle pulled their goaltender with a minute-and-a-half left in the game and put a lot of pressure on the Shamrock goal, but Matt Panciocco was up to the challenge, turning away everything.
Connor Rielly, Ben Deitz, Justin Bedrofian, and freshman Kelly Schofield put forth a solid defensive effort for the Shamrocks, who improve to 5-4 (1-2) on the year.
Feehan takes on Bishop Stang on Saturday in New Bedford.
Dighton-Rehoboth 3, Apponequet 2
NEW BEDFORD - The Falcons netted their first win of the year, scoring two short-handed goals in a South Coast Conference victory over the Lakers
With the game tied 1-1 after the first period, D-R's Dylan Swift scored the first goal with a man down, the assist going to defenseman Zach Severrance. Later in the period, Cam Leis scored the other short-handed goal, Mike Poland with the helper.
In all, the Falcons (1-8) had to overcome 13 penalties. Goalie Jake Roy, with Severrance providing some physical play in front of the net, made 25 saves.
The Falcons' first goal came off the stick of Adam Ferreira with linemates Poland and Swift assisting. D-R takes on Old Rochester, in Bridgewater, on Saturday.
Southeastern 5, Tri-County 3
FRANKLIN - Southeastern Regional scored two goals in the final 90 seconds of the first period and then four unanswered to turn back Tri-County in a Mayflower League game.
Kyle Pittman scored goals at 10:35 and at 13:07 for Tri-County, but the Cougars didn't score again until the third period when Jim McLaughlin scored a power-play goal at 9:38.
Pittman's first goal was unassisted while Tyler Ladoissier and Alex Golash assisted on the second tally. The Cougars (2-7) take on Avon on Saturday at 5 p.m.
