Poirier will seek new term in House

NORTH ATTLEBORO - State Rep. Betty Poirier said Wednesday she was flattered that so many people wanted her to run for state Senate, but she prefers staying right where she is now.

Poirier, R-North Attleboro, told a packed community meeting room at the North Attleboro Police Station that she intends to run for re-election in the fall.

She said she likes being a "hands on" representative who attends all community events.

Representing a large Senate district would stretch her too thin and prevent her from giving constituents the personalized service they expect from her, she said.

Poirier's announcement was immediately followed by one from Rep. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, who said he would run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Scott Brown, who is becoming a U.S. senator. Poirier said both she and Ross wrestled with their decisions.

One consideration, Poirier said, is that she and other Republicans had to figure out how the party could best work to keep the seats held by her, Ross and Brown in Republican possession.

"It is very important to me to protect our seats," she said after the announcement.

She said there is so much of an imbalance between Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature that it has lead to abuses of power and corruption.

" Matt Trowbridge is definitely a candidate worth checking out. I have read over his wesbite and have seen him at MANY events and I am impressed thus far. It's worth looking into. "

" Excellent. Better to have that idiot as one of 160 than representatives than as one of 40 state senators. Whew! Can you imagine the amount of tax dollars she'd be spending sending out all those obnoxious photos of herself posing with every group visiting the State House. Representing us in the Senate means she'd be sending all that taxpayer-financed stuff to a ton of newspapers in her district. As it is, I have to forego reading the paper during my morning breakfast because I'm afraid I'll stumble over another pic of that perpetually frozen smiling face of hers! But I do admit that, anytime I want to go on a diet, I look for one of her photos in the paper and, instantaneously, my appetite's gone!!! "

No I wouldn't, but our senator would. "

" Believe there is a candidate already announced running against B. Poirier. A gentleman named Matt Trowbridge. Don't know much about him as I do not live in BP's district. Do know he is from North Attleboro and has shown up in various places for last several months. Those unhappy with BP might want to 1. run themselves or 2. start looking for someone to support (maybe or maybe not Mr. Trowbridge). Swoopy99_2000 why couldn't someone from Norton step up to the plate? If you have something worth saying the people will hear you...after all until recently Mr. Brown was unheard of outside this area (except as Ayla's dad of course). "

" I'd love to run against her. I live in Norton's Precinct 2 which is the only precinct that Betty Poirier has in Norton. She also has Precinct B of Ward 3 in Attleboro, Precincts 2 and 5 in Mansfield. What gets her elected (other than being unopposed) is that she is from North Attleboro and she represents that entire town. So, unless you are from North Attleboro, the deck is stacked against you especially if you are from Norton. "
