PLAINVILLE - A new scam has residents being called for donations purportedly for the Plainville Fire Department, Fire Chief Ted Joubert said Monday.
Joubert said some residents called him Monday after receiving the fundraising calls, which he believes "probably just started."
Anyone getting called should notify the police, Joubert said. The fire department is not sponsoring a fundraiser.
"We don't want anybody taken advantage of," Joubert said.
One resident said she told the scam artist that she couldn't give to the fire department "because she had just donated to Haiti," the fire chief said.
"The guy gave her all kinds of" grief, Joubert said. "It's just ridiculous that somebody would do that."
