Explore world of Verne at Patriot Place

Nautilus art This Nautilus sculptural jewelry shadowbox is by Niffer Desmond of 19 Moons. It represents an objet d’art that would be aboard the Nautilus submarine in a gallery or study as part of Captain Nemo’s special collection. It is a true porthole framed curiosity cabinet with a specimen of jewelry treasure collected from the Atlantis ruins. The necklace is suspended on a dark velvet backing and lit from above, as though seen through a porthole in the deep abyss, poised to attack. There is a nameplate identifying the specimen above the case, edged with a wave scroll design and submarine above. It reads: Nautilus, Spec No 9, Atlantean Squid. The necklace will be part of one of the interactive games being developed for Patriot Place. (Submitted photo)

FOXBORO - There will be more to see at Patriot Place's new "20,000 Leagues" interactive adventure than deadly puzzles.

Nemo's Steampunk Art Gallery will open in late August or early September.

It will be beside "20,000 Leagues," an interactive, 60-minute video game-style adventure in which players become undersea explorers who must solve deadly puzzles.

"20,000 Leagues" is among two adventure games that 5Wits is developing for Patriot Place, on Route 1.

"Espionage," where players will be international secret agents who are "descrambling audio," may open as soon as early to mid-July, Patriot Place spokesman Jeff Cournoyer said. "20,000 Leagues" will open later at an undetermined date.
The 400- to 800-square-foot Nemo's Steampunk Art Gallery will feature art, primarily 3D, in the steampunk style, which envisions "if the Victorians had computers, how things would have changed," curator Bruce Rosenbaum said.

Rosenbaum said he is working with artists across the country to get items for the gallery, which will feature "things that could've been on the Nautilus," Captain Nemo's submarine, from Jules Verne's novel, "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea."

"The story is a fantasy story, but now we'll kind of envision what kind of modern technology could've been on the Nautilus," he said.

Art will be sold only by calling or e-mailing Rosenbaum, on a first-come, first-served basis.

However, "a lot of (the artists) would be willing to replicate the piece or customize it for the client," he said.

The prices will range from $1,000 to $5,000, with some exceeding that, he said.
Rosenbaum's company, SteamPuffin, is partnering with 5Wits on the gallery.

Rosenbaum said he was approached by 5Wits President Matt DuPlessie, a 1995 graduate of Attleboro High School.

"Jules Verne was really one of the first steampunkers in history," Rosenbaum said.
