ATTLEBORO - Over the years, 18-year-old Hanah Mikulis-Laviano has handled a lot of challenges, from competing in soccer and basketball to being part of a Massachusetts Special Olympics team that represented the Bay State in the nationals a few years ago.

Now the former Brennan Middle School student, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, is battling her fiercest opponent ever: a degenerative illness that is gradually causing parts of her body to break down.
