ATTLEBORO - A dispute over curbside trash has resulted in the arrest of a refuse worker and criminal charges against a 60-year-old South Attleboro man.

Police say an employee of the city's trash contractor, Waste Management, flashed a pocket knife at the man, who confronted workers last Saturday on Tomlinson Road in South Attleboro.

I can't wait to see this before a jury. A 60 y/o resident is threatened alledgedly with a knife by a gang of thugs; he shakenly jumps into his truck to flee. The paper reports that the trash truck hit Garcia, but the man assualted is charged. I'll take vacation days to support the innocent gent over the gang of punks!

In May 2006 this outfit went on strike AGAINST residents, in violation of their contract with the city. This was to observe the Day Without Illegal Immigrants. Still waiting for my rebate for uncollected trash. This latest issue is directly related to where the allegiance lies. It's not with their customers.

Yikes, where's the assumptions on these workers being here illegally com into play? Wow.

Actually you’re right. There was no interest in illegal workers in our neighborhoods in ’06, but after this assault with a deadly weapon, by an agent of the city the contract MUST be immediately addressed. We should be safe in our homes and neighborhoods from these animals we pay.

    Splumb, You are correct.
When the service is poor, and you call the town, they will try to give you Waste Managements number..... REFUSE IT! The city chooses the company they pay. I pay the city, so I gripe to the city. If they get enough calls they will move to choose a company with better customer service.

Waste Management should move quickly before we all demand action they will not like. Are all workers here legally? What individual's 1st instinct is to pull a knife on a 60 y/o customer?

At least they even picked his garbage up. They skipped my side of the street entirely, and despite calling and having customer service put in a request to have them come back the next day, the didn't. So we all still have trash sitting on the curb with no room in our barrels for more. Thanks, Waste Management.

Clarification: The city's collection contractor honored "A Day Without (Illegal) Immigrants." on May 2, 2006. If they continue, call ICE.

Time to call ICE. Many are undocumented. Don't forget the May Day strike in '05.

Sad that whatever the disagreement, it came to this! I will say, though, that I wish these guys took better care of the barrels while emptying them. These things aren't cheap and I'm tired of having to replace mine because they get thrown with total disregard to crack and lose covers. Until WM or Attleboro decides to supply a barrel for trash like they do for recyclables, these guys should take a little more care with them.

Yeah these workers have no consideration for people's barrels. I always see them just throw them several feet after emptying them out. They end up cracked or rolling around out into the streets because they don't want to place them back down.
