TAUNTON — The Rehoboth man charged with fatally shooting a friend accidentally while playing with a handgun has hired a new lawyer.
Joseph Medeiros, 18, of 131 New St., was scheduled for a dangerousness hearing Tuesday in Taunton District Court, but it was postponed to July 18 at the request of his new lawyer, Frank Camera of Boston.
Medeiros told police he accidentally shot his friend, Michael Pacheco, 17, while playing with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun at Pacheco’s Dighton home last Tuesday night, according to a prosecutor.
Pacheco was a student at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School.
Medeiros has pleaded innocent to involuntary manslaughter, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and unlawful carrying of a firearm.
The weapon, allegedly stolen out of Brockton, was recently purchased, according to a police report.
