What is NIE?
The Sun Chronicle Newspaper in Education Program (NIE) is an educational partnership between the newspaper, local businesses and participating local school systems. The NIE program provides area schools with the newspapers and teaching materials at no cost. The goal of NIE is to promote literacy, global awareness and a sense of civic responsibility. Students use The Sun Chronicle as a "living textbook" - an exciting way to motivate students and bridge the gap between classroom learning and the "real world". NEW! WRITING WIZARDS – Every Monday from Sept. 8 – Dec. 1, 2008
This 12-week series teaches students the step-by-step strategies of the writing process. From prewriting to publishing, students will learn how easy it is to make magic with words. Students will learn how to choose a subject, how to construct the perfect paragraph, and how to enhance their writing by adding details. Newspaper activities are included with each lesson. Grades 3-8.
NEW! ELECTING A PRESIDENT – Every Tuesday and Friday from Sept.16-Oct.28, 2008
Learn the whole story – from primaries, to the conventions, to the issues, right up to Election Day. This series will also aid you in running your own classroom elections. Grades 3-8.
NEW! THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN – Every Tuesday beginning December 2, 2008.
This non-fiction 10-week series is based on the book, “The Life of Abraham Lincoln”. The book, first published in 1901, offers an insight into young Lincoln before becoming President. Perfect for the Lincoln Bicentennial in February 2009. Grades 3-8.
WORLD of WONDER – Every Wednesday
Exploring the realms of history, science, nature and technology every Wednesday. This full-color feature will cover topics such as the human heart, Madagascar, City of Petra, zebras and Halloween in the coming months. Perfect for readers of all ages.

PHOTOJOURNALISM CONTEST Join us in celebrating the U.S. Constitution in your classroom when school reopens! The Massachusetts Newspapers in Education Council (MNIEC) is offering its’ Second Annual Statewide Photojournalism Contest for students in grades 5 – 8 on the subject of The Five Freedoms of the First Amendment. Order your First Freedoms teaching guide today. This guide will allow you to focus on one freedom right each week and how that freedom is being challenged in the news today. An example of last year’s winning photo in each category will give your students an idea of the type of photo taken. Deadline for submitting student photojournalism entries to The Sun Chronicle NIE dept. is Friday, October 17, 2008. Each newspaper will choose five winning entries, one for each freedom. The local winning entries will be displayed with winning entries from other Massachusetts newspapers for final judging at MetroWest News in Framingham, MA. Five state winners will be notified on Friday, December 5, 2008. An award ceremony for all finalists will be held at the State House on Bill of Rights Day, Monday, December 15, 2008.
