Wrentham

WRENTHAM - With the stock market slide and many requests, it again will be a tough year making decisions on who gets money from the town's main trust fund.

Some $98,536 in requests have come in looking for help from the Sweatt Fund. However, only about $65,000 is available, not including $14,000 in a separate account for special projects.

"We received quite a few requests," advisory committee Chairman Bill Jones told selectmen.

Melanie ConnorWRENTHAM - Air Force Airman Melanie Connor graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Jacqueline Connor of Wrentham and John Connor of Waltham, and is a 2008 graduate of King Philip Regional High School.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Local elementary school students have been busy fundraising this school year and assisting with other worthy causes.

Pupils collected about 1,000 pounds of their Halloween candy for troops overseas. Around Veterans Day the treats were shipped in 18 boxes to two units in Afghanistan, two units in Iraq, and two units in the United States which were getting ready to be deployed.

State Rep. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, visited with the students to show his support for the Treats for Our Troops cause. And a local business, Groundscapes Express, donated about $300 for the shipping costs to send the treats. The collection coincided with Spirit Day, and a canned food drive.
