NORTH ATTLEBORO — Fourth graders from a private robotics club won two awards at a statewide competition in Rhode Island over the weekend.

Planet Robotics competed at the Rhode Island First Lego League Championship at Roger Williams University and won the Project Innovative Solution Award and Global Innovation Award, while coming in second in the robot performance category, teacher Pallavi Naravane said.

Last year they won an award in the research category to qualify for the Rhode Island competition.

Naravane said the students were given tasks to solve in the competition.

For instance, in winning the innovative solution competition, they designed new shoes that would address the foot problems astronauts have when spending long periods in weightlessness in space, she said.

Late last year, they participated in a qualifier at Gordon School in East Providence and won the Research Award for their “Space Shoes” project. They were ranked third for robot scores and qualified to go the next level.
