A Boston-area theater company specializing in immersive, experimental and psychological theater will be an artist-in-residence at the Marilyn Rodman Performing Arts Center (the former Orpheum).

The Psych Drama Company will be at the theater in downtown Foxboro for the 2019-20 season and will have three productions, beginning with Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage in October. All performances will include post-show discussions led by Harvard Medical School psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers.

Producing artistic director, clinical psychologist and accomplished actress Dr. Wendy Lippe is the creative force behind the company, according to a press release by Bob Hickey, MRPAC’s executive director.

The post-show discussions led by mental health professionals will provide outreach into the community with education on a wide range of psychological topics contained within the plays, which is a rare event in small theaters, Hickey said.

Lippe’s productions and post-show discussions will ask audience members to slow down, go deeper, and to reflect upon their lives and relationships in meaningful ways, using the vital mechanism of live theater, Hickey said.

The productions are meant to draw audience members into an experience where they become participants, not merely passive spectators.

“We are changing people’s ideas and expectations about what theater is by deconstructing its more traditional forms of presentation,” Lippe said. “We ask audience members to open their minds and hearts to a new kind of theatrical experience.”

“God of Carnage” will have a preview performance and post-show discussion that is open to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., with performances continuing Friday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and concluding with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for students, veterans and seniors. For tickets or more information, go to www.orpheum.org or contact the MRPAC Box Office at 508-543-ARTS (2787). Contact boxoffice@orpheum.org for membership and group discounts.
