attle fire 12-7-18

Firefighters and trucks at the scene of a roof fire at Engineered Materials Solutions, at 39 Perry Ave., Friday afternoon.

ATTLEBORO — Workers making repairs accidentally ignited a fire on the roof of a metals manufacturing plant off Pleasant Street Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to Engineered Materials Solutions, at 39 Perry Ave., around 12:15 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Tim Birch said a preliminary investigation revealed that workers using blow torches to seal rubber joints on the roof top asphalt accidentally ignited wood under the material.

The workers initially tried to put the fire out before calling the fire department, the fire official said.

Workers inside the building smelled the odor of smoke, Birch said.

No injuries were reported and the fire, which encompassed an area of the roof about 10 to 20 feet long, did not damage any equipment, according to Birch.

Police and fire officials were at the scene for about an hour.
