ATTLEBORO — The city’s fire department has moved its dispatch center from its Union Street headquarters near downtown to a satellite station in South Attleboro.

Fire Chief Scott LaChance said the headquarters is 120 years old and the dispatch center was worn and too small.

The South Attleboro station on West Street is only 20 years old and was recently updated.

The chief said preparations for the move actually started more than two years ago.

“This has been a lengthy transition, and we’re happy to have successfully completed this move,” Lachance said. “I am confident this new location will fully support our dispatch center’s operations and commitment to high quality service to our residents.”

The fire department has hired eight civilian dispatchers to replace firefighters who had been doing the work.
