ATTLEBORO — Patti Panzer got an unwelcome surprise with her Dunkin’ Donuts ice tea Friday — it came in a Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl cup.
Of course, the Eagles beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl so the graphic reminder of the loss was not appreciated by Panzer and other customers.
“I thought, ‘is this some kind of a joke’? This is Patriots Nation,” she said with a laugh.
Panzer immediately reacted, covering up the offending graphic with a Koozie — an insulating cover — with a Patriots logo on it.
She posted a photo and comment on Facebook and reaction was swift.
“That’s sacrilegious,” Ed Simmons wrote.
Others were more kind, speculating that there was some kind of corporate mixup at Dunkin’ headquarters.
In fact, that is exactly what happened, according to the company.
Apparently the wrong boxes of cups went out to some stores. Massachusetts stores should have gotten Patriots cups.
The offending cups have been removed and the company apologized for the mix up. The Canton-based firm issued a statement:
“We appreciate our loyal customers for bringing this to our attention, and we are taking steps to ensure all of our local stores are stocked with the correct cups. Go Pats.”
Panzer said she would not be boycotting Dunkin’ — she likes it too much.
In fact, she didn’t want to reveal which franchise was using the Eagles cup because she didn’t want the people at her favorite store to get in trouble.
People on Facebook said several stores in the area used them.
