Mansfield Field of Honor

Flags on display at Mansfield’s Field of Honor in 2015.

MANSFIELD — Mansfield’s Field of Honor, a giant display of American flags honoring veterans, service personnel, first responders and community heroes, will hold its opening ceremony and erect hundreds of flags at the Keach Memorial near the South Common on Saturday, May 20.

The third annual display runs through June 17 and is expected to surpass last year’s total of 300 flags provided by local residents.

The display, run by a local volunteer group, is made up of flags purchased by individuals for $30 to honor a hero or relative; purchased flags remain standing throughout the display. Together with sponsorships by local companies and organizations, the Field of Honor has raised thousands of dollars for veterans’ charities.

The May 20 kickoff will begin with an opening ceremony at the Elks home on South Main Street followed by assembly of the flags and erecting them at the memorial on West Street. The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m.

In addition to the flags, which can be purchased online at, T shirts commemorating the Field of Honor will be on sale at Mansfield Bank. Flags, which can be kept by purchasers when the display is over, can also be purchased by calling Jeri Rumsis at 508-337-9344.

Rick Foster can be reached at 508-236-0360.
