MANSFIELD — For the second time in two months, a truck struck a guardrail and bridge support on Interstate 495 South at the Route 140 overpass.

Two occupants in the box truck suffered serious injuries and were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence after the crash Saturday afternoon, according to the Mansfield fire department. The condition of the victims was not available.

Mansfield and Norton firefighters were dispatched to the highway around 12:30 p.m. The truck had turned onto its side. Traffic was backed up to near the Interstate 95 exit to I-495 until the truck was removed.

On Oct. 9, a tractor trailer carrying a load of salad dressing struck the same abutment.

Officials checked the bridge for damage but it was not closed. The accident occurred at the exit to South Main Street in Mansfield.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by state police.
