PLAINVILLE — The wrongful death lawsuit brought against Michelle Carter, who is serving a jail sentence for her role in the suicide of her boyfriend, has been dismissed.

Carter, 22, of Plainville, started serving a 15-month jail term in February after the state Supreme Judicial Court unanimously upheld her 2017 manslaughter conviction in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III in 2014.

Carter, then 17, had urged Roy to kill himself in a series of text messages and phone calls before the Mattapoisett man took his life. He died after breathing in toxic fumes from a water pump inside his pickup truck while parked in a Fairhaven parking lot.

In a controversial verdict after a jury-waived trial, a judge found Carter had committed manslaughter by urging Roy to get back inside the truck after he had gotten out. Roy had had second thoughts about taking his life.

Eric Goldman, an attorney for Roy’s mother, Lynn Roy, told The Boston Herald the case has been “resolved” but declined to provide details.

Carter’s attorneys also refused comment.

Court records in Dedham Superior Court indicate that on Tuesday both parties stipulated that the case be dismissed “with prejudice and without costs,” meaning that Lynn Roy cannot file another case on the same claim.

Lynn Roy filed the $4.2 million lawsuit against Carter in August 2017, alleging her “wanton and reckless conduct” caused her son’s suicide.

Carter was sentenced to serve 15 months of a 2 1/2-year jail term with the balance suspended with probation. She will be eligible for parole around October, one of her lawyers said in February.

Her lawyers vowed to appeal her conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court.
