NORTON - Police say a 20-year-old man fighting with another man in his driveway was seriously injured early Friday morning when he was struck by a car backing out of the driveway.
The victim, Christopher Vassalotti, of 274 East Main St., was found by police bleeding from the head and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence in a Norton ambulance, police said.
He was in fair condition Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Police were dispatched to Vassalotti's home around 4 a.m. for a report of a large fight taking place and were met by about 10 people quarreling in the driveway.
After an initial investigation, officers discovered that Vassalotti was struck in the driveway by a vehicle driven by a woman identified as Ashley Fennell, 17, of Freetown, who was still at the scene.
Witnesses told police Vassalotti and the other man were wrestling in the driveway, when he was struck by the vehicle as it was backing up, according to police.
Fennell was arrested by Patrolman Bryan King and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving to endanger and failing to use care and caution while backing, police said.
Another man, Justin Bombardier, 22, of 655 North Main St. in Mansfield, was charged with malicious damage to property for allegedly damaging Fennell's vehicle after the incident, according to police.
The incident was investigated by officers Brian Greco and Jesse Winters and Detective Todd Bramwell.
