FOXBORO— New England Patriots’ receiver Julian Edelman didn’t want to go anywhere else, and luckily for him, he doesn’t have to worry about that any longer.
“I couldn’t be any more happy,” Edelman told the media regarding his contract extension on Thursday after the Patriots finished their third day of organized team activities. “I love being here. I don’t want to be anywhere else and I’m excited for this upcoming year.”
Edelman, who turned 33 on Wednesday, signed a two-year extension with the team on Tuesday and is now under contract through 2021.
“It’s awesome,” Edelman said. “I’m born here in my football career and I’m going to have a few more years here. And I just want to take a second here and thank the Kraft family, coach (Bill) Belichick, Nick Caserio and everyone that was involved, my agents, for getting this done.”
Edelman’s extension includes $12 million in guaranteed money and an $8 million signing bonus, according to multiple reports. According to ESPN, there is $19 million in ‘new’ money added to his previous deal, which was set to expire after the 2019-20 season.
A three-time Super Bowl champion with MVP honors in Super Bowl LIII, Edelman feels he still has much left to accomplish. The undersized receiver is the same one who the Patriots took in the seventh round back 2009.
“I’ve accomplished goals in the past, and when you do that, you set new goals,” Edelman said. “I’ve been blessed and fortunate to attain and reach a lot of my dreams, but I still have a lot of other things that I want to go for. (I) got a big chip on my shoulder still and I look forward to coming out here and contributing to the team and working hard each day, helping younger guys.”
The Patriots next two-day session of OTAs will be on May 29-30 with the team’s mandatory minicamp starting June 4.
