NORTH ATTLEBORO — For the second time this season, the North Attleboro High boys’ tennis team served notice to the rest of the future South Sectional field for the MIAA Tournament.

The Rocketeers stunned Hockomock League and defending South Sectional champion Sharon 3-2 for a second time.

On the strength of the No. 1 doubles team of Ben Pfeffer and Vikram Senthilkumaran winning a marathon three-set match (in which every set was decided by a tiebreaker) North was able to emerge victorious and extend its unbeaten skein to 16 matches.

“We were a little tighter at first; I think the kids felt some pressure,” Mike LaCasse, the North coach said as Sharon won the first sets of the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches along with the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches.

Heroically, North’s No. 1 doubles team overcame a one-set deficit, taking their second set in a 7-4 tiebreaker and then earning a 7-3 third-set tiebreaker win to give the Big Red its decisive third team point.

Similarly, North’s No. 1 singles player, Richard Bermudez, played a marathon match. Bermudez suffered his first loss of a set this season, but drew even by winning the second set and then took a dominating 7-1 tiebreaker to determine the third set of his match.

North’s other unbeaten singles specialist, Christian Bermudez, gave the Rocketeers their first point, losing just one game at No. 2 singles.

No. 3 singles player Jack Cannon and the No. 1 doubles team of Sean Desrochers and Nate Ihley each lost just one game in taking straight-set wins for the King Philip High boys’ team (16-2) in a 4-1 non-league victory over Bishop Feehan. The Shamrocks’ Ben Simmons lost a 12-game second set, but then lost just one game in the decisive third set of his No. 1 singles match to win, but the Shamrocks (7-8) had their postseason hopes nearly end.

Nick Putney won a first-set tiebreaker 7-2 to win his No. 2 singles match for KP. KP will host the unbeaten Rocketeers Thursday, while Bishop Feehan’s last chance to qualify for the postseason will be on Friday against North Attleboro.

The King Philip High girls’ team (14-4) took a 5-0 victory at Bishop Feehan in a non-league match. Erin Regnier did not lose a game in winning her No. 1 singles match for the Warriors, while Meghan Sepich and Caitlin Gonser each lost just one game in taking their respective No. 2 and 3 singles matches. KP next meets North Attleboro Friday, while the Shamrocks (5-9) meet Sharon Thursday.

The North Attleboro High girls’ team was able to win just eight games among the three singles match in a 5-0 Hockomock League loss at Sharon.

The Foxboro High boys’ team (8-8) qualified for the MIAA Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Stoughton in a Hockomock League match. Freshman Jason Kandula fired a straight-set shutout at No. 3 singles for Foxboro.

Senior Sophia Prinos overcame a 5-2 first-set deficit to win an 8-6 tiebreaker and win her No. 1 singles match in straight sets, but the MIAA Tournament-bound Foxboro High girls’ team (14-2) fell 4-1 to defending MIAA Division 3 state champion Martha’s Vineyard.

Emma Wheeler took a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, losing just two games, but the Dighton-Rehoboth High girls’ team (3-13) fell 3-2 to Middleboro in a non-league match. The Falcons host Old Rochester Thursday.
